When the surface becomes part of the design
DIE-CUT OPENINGS
Die-cut openings are a distinctive form of die-cut design in which selected areas of the label are removed. This allows the glass, product colour or other elements of the packaging to remain visible and become an integral part of the design.
TYPICAL APPLICATIONS
- die-cut logos and brand symbols
- lettering and monograms
- windows and graphic openings
- attention-grabbing special editions
- decorative or functional openings
WHAT WORKS WELL
When a die-cut opening is more than a decorative feature and follows a clear design concept, it can, for example, provide a glimpse of the product, reinforce the brand story or create a surprising detail that captures attention. The result is an exceptional label in which the material, bottle and contents become part of the overall design.
OFTEN UNDERESTIMATED
Die-cut openings are particularly demanding on the design, material, die-cutting tool and labelling process. Fine lines, small remaining areas and narrow connecting sections must be designed with sufficient stability.
With die-cut lettering such as A, B, D, O or P, the inner portions would fall out unless they are connected to the surrounding label. For these portions to remain in place, they must be secured with sufficiently wide connecting sections. The reliable removal of die-cut waste must also be taken into account.
EFFECTIVE USE
Effective die-cut openings create visual focal points, reinforce a brand concept, reveal the product or serve a functional design purpose. What matters is not the size of the opening, but the thinking behind the idea. Die-cut openings should thus not be seen as being decorative.
IN PRACTICE
Creating a successful die-cut opening combines creative thinking with technical feasibility. Vector-based artwork, sufficient connecting-section widths, suitable radii and a material appropriate for the design provide the foundation.
Show us your idea. Our technical team assesses the design, artwork, material, die-cutting feasibility and labelling performance. We then provide clear feedback on what can be implemented directly and where technical adjustments or testing may be advisable.
By working together, we can combine your creative concept with our technical expertise to develop an exceptional label that can be produced reliably and consistently.
