VARNISH EFFECTS
Varnish effects protect a label, change its visual appearance or create a distinctive tactile quality. To choose which varnish to use, it is important to consider its intended function and the conditions the label will be exposed to.

TYPICAL USES
- protect against scuffing, scratching and abrasion
- resist moisture and chemical influences
- highlight individual design elements
- create glossy and matt effects
- control the tactile qualities of the surface
- create differentiation at the point of sale
WHAT WORKS WELL
From the outset, the purpose of the varnish must be clearly defined. For example, a label intended for long transport routes and demanding temperatures and humidity may require a particularly durable protective varnish. On the other hand, if a varnish is used purely for design purposes, it will be selected for its visual or tactile effect.
OFTEN UNDERESTIMATED
The same varnish can produce completely different results on different materials and when applied using different processes. The paper surface, absorbency, varnish formulation and amount applied all contribute to the final result.
Varnishes can serve functional, visual and tactile purposes. The key is to define their function before production and ensure that they are applied using the appropriate technical processes. Varnishes are not only used for protection or decoration.
WHAT WE KNOW
Varnishes can be applied using offset, flexographic and screen printing. Depending on the process, the amount of varnish, layer thickness, definition of the edges and effect will vary. On smooth, low-absorption materials, offset or flexographic varnishes can already produce very good results. For particularly pronounced visual or tactile effects, screen printing offers additional possibilities because it allows a thicker layer of varnish to be applied.
At Vollherbst, we help you match the varnish, material and application process. As soon as we can, we clarify whether the varnish would be used for protection, to change the surface, to highlight specific areas, or to create a distinctive tactile quality. This ensures that the varnish serves a purposeful, functional, and design solution.
