Authenticity begins with the material

UNCOATED PAPER

Uncoated paper generally has an open, untreated surface with a distinctive tactile quality. With uncoated paper, the colour, fibres and texture of the paper become a visible part of the overall design.

WHAT WORKS WELL

The material and its tactile qualities must reinforce the product’s heritage, craftsmanship, and character. Creating a contrast between a natural paper surface and carefully selected finishing techniques such as hot foil stamping, embossing or glossy varnishes can be particularly effective.

WHAT TO CONSIDER

Uncoated paper often has an absorbent surface. As a result, colours may appear more muted, contours can lose some sharpness, and varnishes may absorb more deeply into the material. The paper’s own colour also affects the printed result. The design should therefore be adapted to the chosen material at an early stage.

SUSTAINABILITY

Uncoated paper is not automatically more sustainable. Its environmental impact depends on various factors, such as the source of the fibres, recycled content, manufacturing process, transport and technical treatments – not simply on its natural appearance.

IN PRACTICE

There are many uncoated papers with suitable adhesives and moisture barriers for use in refrigerators or ice buckets. Vollherbst will help you select the right material. We also recommend that we do a press proof or proof on the original paper for colour-critical designs.
